The most serious problem related to soil erosion in modern time is human development. As the population grew, more forests and trees were cut down and cleared. Trees and other plants in forests can take in extra water from rain and rivers which prevent erosion.  They also slow down wind and reduce erosion by wind. When land is cleared and turned into a development, it will be paved over by concrete which does not carry water. The runoff will make erosion worse.
