Their goal was to push aside the debate over slavery, whether they were for or against it, because they wanted to avoid seccessionism. They believed that slavery was not a big enough issue for the Union and the Confederation to split up and were also against joining the Republican or the Democrat Party. The Constitutional Union Party was made up of Whigs and anti-immigration party commonly called the Know Nothings.
