What is nitrogen?

Nitrogen is an element that occurs naturally. It is present in gaseous form in the highest concentration out of all gases in the earth’s atmosphere. Nitrogen is present in amino acids, nucleic acids and many other compounds.

Nitrogen present in the atmosphere can be fixed by only a particular group of bacteria and they convert it into biologically useful forms. This form of nitrogen can then be used by other living organisms in the form of plant and animal products. This is called nitrogen fixation.

Nitrogen is an important component of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Proteins make up the structural component of living beings like tissues, membranes etc. Proteins also make up hormones and enzymes which are essential for a lot of functions of living beings.

Amino acids also form urea which is the by-product of amino acid digestion. The nitrogen present in urea and proteins is organic nitrogen meaning that this nitrogen originated in living beings.

Hence, nitrogen is a component of amino acids used by all living beings to make proteins.
