Dean studied at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, after which he transferred to the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1961. He initially started working for a law company in Washington, D.C., and from 1966 to 1967 he was the House Judiciary Committee's main minority (Republican) counsel. He accepted a position as an associate deputy attorney general in the Nixon administration after serving for two years as the assistant director of the National Commission on Reform of Federal Criminal Laws. Dean was chosen by the president to serve as White House attorney in 1970.
