Deoxygenated blood flows from the right atrium into the right ventricle. The heart pumps it out of the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery, starting the pulmonary circulation. Blood travels to the lungs, exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen, and returns to the left atrium. Oxygenated blood flows from the left atrium into the underlying left ventricle to resume systemic circulation.
