A renowned and well-liked American historian, Samuel Eliot Morison is best known for his authoritative and well-liked writings on American and marine history. In 1912, he graduated with a Ph.D. from Harvard University, and for the next 40 years, he worked as a history professor there. In 1942, he published Admiral of the Ocean Sea, a history of Christopher Columbus, and John Paul Jones: A Sailor's Biography, all of which were nominated for Pulitzer Prizes (1959). He was given the task of writing a history of American naval activities during World War II in 1942, and between 1947 and 1962, he completed 15 volumes of the book. At Harvard University, Morison left his position in 1955. Writing was all he did for the rest of his life.
