This act was signed into law on August 6, 1965, by President Lyndon Johnson. It outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting. He didn't believe blacks should have a right to vote and shouldn't be apart of any laws. Johnson vetoed the bill because he thought it would single out power in the government, but Congress overrode it and the Republican Party turned against him.
