In the story, the cousin Charlie trying to show off climbing tree and stealing apples from others field is good deed, but Dolly and May were clever and knew that it's not a good idea to enter someones field without their permission and stealing their fruits, they even tried to convince Charlie no to do this, but he went against them and ended up putting himself in trouble.

In the poem the brother has a lot of pride in being best baseball player, and in this pride he made fun of his sister being a girl. He tried to show that boys are always strong and good players,but his sister gave a befitting reply to this unnecessary gender discrimination and taught him a lesson that girls are not weaker than boys in any subject.

A brief assessment of all the above things tells us that girls are trying to tell that they are not less than boys in any way, and they too can be knowledgeable and successful.
