In addition to insufficient wages, an unrealistic expectation of how much work the employees need to accomplish was also put onto them. They were "ground to dust." As the workers were treated like dogs and payed insufficiently on top of that, there was no wonder they would go on strike. Also, the workers had families that they wanted to spend time with in addition to making enough money to pay for their homes, clothes, food, and other supplies.
