Sagot :
Explanation:
The invention of the steam ship and especially the railroad. It increased both the speed and amount of goods.
Iron hull steam ships could be made far bigger than any sailing ship, and faster. Even the fastest windjammers would only average 8 knots or so overall, even if they could do burst of speed for 16 to 18 knots, and sailing ship.were always at the mercy of the wind. Steam ships could travel at a steady 6, 8, or even 10 knots or higher and were not at the mercy of the winds. Trains could travel in a day what a horse drawn wagon might take week, and loads of far greater size. For the first time in history, transporting by land became as cheap as by sea.
The airplane, of course, allowing you to reach places in a day what could have taken a week or more.
And the automobile. It changed the structure of cities, allowing one to travel easily 25, 50 miles, even 300 point to point wherever and whenever the driver wanted, not to someone’ else's schedule (train, plane, ship) and destination.
In the past 2 centuries, there have been 4 major changes in passenger transportation. These are:
- Steamboats
- Railroads
- Motor Vehicles
- Airplanes
Human beings have always sought to make travelling easier so that they could move further to both settle and trade. From the 1800s, massive strides were made as the following became widespread:
- Steamboats - these were sea vessels powered by steam and therefore capable of going long distances. They allowed easier transportation of both goods and services up until the 20th century.
- Railroads - these allowed for travel all over the place in a time before cars. Railroads were quite key in the settlement of the Western part of the United States.
- Motor Vehicle - these came in the early 20th century and are still dominant today. They were able to make travel much more personal thereby allowing people to travel long distances with more ease.
- Airplanes - these allowed for travel over long distances at great speeds such that people were able to go to other places with great ease. Where a trip would take weeks with a car, a plane would get there in hours.
In conclusion, humanity has come a long way in passenger travel over the last two century and there is hope that we will keep going further.
