Steam ships could travel at a steady 6, 8, or even 10 knots or higher and were not at the mercy of the winds. Trains could travel in a day what a horse drawn wagon might take week, and loads of far greater size. For the first time in history, transporting by land became as cheap as by sea.

The airplane, of course, allowing you to reach places in a day what could have taken a week or more.

And the automobile. It changed the structure of cities, allowing one to travel easily 25, 50 miles, even 300 point to point wherever and whenever the driver wanted, not to someone’ else's schedule (train, plane, ship) and destination.

  • Motor Vehicle - these came in the early 20th century and are still dominant today. They were able to make travel much more personal thereby allowing people to travel long distances with more ease.

  • Airplanes - these allowed for travel over long distances at great speeds such that people were able to go to other places with great ease. Where a trip would take weeks with a car, a plane would get there in hours.

In conclusion, humanity has come a long way in passenger travel over the last two century and there is hope that we will keep going further.
