In his position as the Vice president of Research and Development at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, he tried to make safer cigarettes but soon realized that the company did not care about safer cigarettes as they simply wanted to prevent further liability.

When Dr. Wigand recommended that they remove a harmful substance they dismissed his recommendation because they believes that sales would drop if they removed it.

This, coupled with the lies told by tobacco bosses to Congress about the health effects of cigarettes caused Dr. Wigand to denounce the industry for minimizing the health and safety issues of tobacco use.
