The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
The IB Learner Profile
What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?
The IB Diploma Programme was created in 1968, in Geneva, Switzerland. Its original purpose was to allow international mobility of students, by providing schools with a curriculum and qualification recognized around the world. The programme has earned an excellent reputation and it has become a highly respected Graduation Diploma recognized for admission to universities throughout the world. It is a demanding and balanced pre-university course of study that leads to examinations. It is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged between 16 and 19. While in high school, IB students share an academic experience that emphasizes critical thinking, intercultural understanding and exposure to a variety of points of view. The grading system is criterion-based, consistent from one examination session to the next and it is applied equally to all schools. It is offered in the last two years of high school in Ontario and it may be obtained in addition to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
